About Cora

Cora is an artist living and working in Hampton in South East England. Originally from Scotland, she studied at Edinburgh College of Art where she discovered her love of bold expressive colour.

This was commented on early by a life drawing tutor who upon seeing one of her life drawings, mentioned that she must have her Monet eyes on. Looking back, Cora isn’t sure this was the compliment she originally thought it was.

It wasn’t however until after she returned from living in Florence at the age of maybe 23, that she began painting with oils on canvas and really began to explore expressing herself via this medium.

In her flat in Camberwell above a flower shop, she spent hours painting the only person who would sit still for long enough - herself.

What followed were a series of portraits that could be described as ‘not very flattering’ but Cora saw them as explorations of not only a face she knew very well, but the shifting light cast from an evening in the city, or a weekend morning and the magic of colour that followed.

And a bit more

Cora’s work is predominantly oil on canvas and inspired by colour and movement. Even in the stillness of a portrait there is a movement and energy that she seeks to bring to life in her artworks.

Inspired by Egon Schiele, Georgia O’Keefe, Vanessa Bell and with a healthy appreciation of Mr Bingo and Bill Murphy, Cora hopes that reading about her work in the third party hasn’t been too awful and you stick around to find out more.
